Fishing for trout out of a drift boat is quite a bit of fun. One thing that has become a bit more popular over the past few years is fishing for predatory fish like pike on the fly. Fly fishing for Northern Pike is exhilarating can be extremely productive but can also be tough. What makes pike fishing even more fun is fishing in a slow meandering river from a drift boat knowing that there could be a pike of 40” nearby and that one could eat your fly, or a smaller pike you’re reeling in. Starting two years ago we started running trips on several rivers around the state for these kinds of trips. We’ve found that the best time of the year to go is from mid-May through mid-late June depending on water temps. These trips are generally full day 8 hour drifts and depending on the river and location, it may either be a through float (floating from point A to point B) or we may just motor upriver and fish back to the boat launch. With very little pressure there’s a good chance that some of the fish you’re fishing for haven’t seen a lure or a fly in a long time and will attack with bad intentions. If you’re the kind of person that loves mean, aggressive, big fish and enjoy chucking big meaty streamers all day this may be a great opportunity for you to get out on a unique kind of drift boat fishing experience. There’s a good chance it’ll be unlike anything you’ve ever done before and there’s an even better chance that’ll you’ll be coming back for more.
