Hard to believe June is already here!! The rain we got on Friday did much less than we had hoped, but not to worry, water temps have continued to drop significantly over the past couple of days. The Lamoille yesterday morning was 58 up towards Wolcott, the Winooski was a bit warmer, around 64 but I’m sure things have dropped more since yesterday. Water clarity on both the WInooski and Lamoille is fantastic. Yesterday evening was the first time I’ve seen fish consistently rise on the Winooski, although not a lot of fish were rising it was still good to see. Tons of bugs on the water, mostly Cahils and Sulfurs along with some Caddis. Hopefully more fish start keying in on top over the next few days! It could get real good in a matter of a day or two. Got fish last night nymphing and streamer fishing, nothing crazy but for an hour of fishing there was plenty of action.
With cooler temps this week the early am may be a touch slower, hard to say for sure, if you go early and don’t get into em don’t get discouraged, go get a coffee then come back once things have warmed up a bit. Finding more fish now in the faster flowing water, lots of the wild fish have seemed to work there way into the turbulent pocket water as well as the heads of the pools. Most of the stocked fish are still hanging a little behind them in the slightly slower water. That’s generally where you’ll find the really big trout as well. The long term forecast is looking fantastic for trout fishing on the bigger rivers, cool temps at night and not that warm during the day. Water levels are good at the moment, they might start to get a little on the low side if we don’t see much for rain but low water isn’t the end of the world. It will just make it easier to wade and might concentrate fish a bit more.
Good luck to everyone getting out this week, I think it’s safe to say you should cancel any plans you have so you can go fish.
