More rain! Once again we were really starting to worry about the water getting low….Prior to yesterday the fishing had remained pretty good. Both on the trout and Landlocked Salmon fronts. The best trout fishing has been on the warmer days which it looks like we’ll seea few of those this coming week. Still some really solid dry fly fishing to be had, we got a good number of fish on both BWOs and Griffith Gnats. On the nymphing front we’ve been having luck with all the usual suspects. Both for Salmon and trout. #16s and 18s have definitely been more effective lately than larger sized flies which makes perfect sense given the smaller bugs.
The rain we received yesterday, and the rain we’ll continue to receive today is definitely going to make things challenging. Fish will still be caught, but likely not on the larger rivers for the next few days. Today will be tricky in our area, some of the small, high elevation streams may be fishable, with that being said, lots of the brook trout are spawning and shouldn’t be harassed. Any of the smaller streams that hold rainbows would be worth checking out as those fish should be active and willing to eat a small streamer or nymph. Tomorrow should be far better, assuming we don’t get too much more rain today water levels in some of the mid sized tribs will be at good streamer flows. Be sure to have a sink tip and some big flies if you’re hitting the water tomorrow or tuesday, by Wednesday, the majority of the mid sized tribs will be back to a normal, fishable level. The main stem of the Winooski and Lamoille may take another couple of days to come back down. With the warmer temps Wed-Friday be sure to get out on the water. The fishing should be good and the weathers going to be nice, may be the last warm weather we see for a while!
Good luck to everyone getting out!
