We were fortunate enough to get another pile of rain last night… As we’re writing this the majority of the rivers in our area are in pretty rough shape, Winooski and Lamoille are shot, the Winooski may need four or five days to clear up, the Lamoille should only be a day or two. Most of the mid sized tribs like the Dog are also in pretty rough shape, although by this evening some of those might be prime candidates for big streamers on a sink-tip.
All rain aside, prior to today the fishing had been pretty good. We’ve been able to get a few fish on dries but mostly still on nymphs and streamers. With the higher water, anticipate more streamer fishing and nymphing over the next few days with the higher flows, that’s not to say that you won’t run into some dry fly activity but I wouldn’t get your hopes up. We’ve still been finding the majority of the fish in the slower moving water. We had been doing pretty well on the Winooski, the biggest thing we had to do was use additional weight, even in the slower moving sections the water’s still moving just quick enough that if you don’t have a longer sink tip or enough weight you’re not going to be in the game.
The next five days are looking pretty dry and warm which should drastically improve the conditions as long as the no rain forecast holds true.
