River Conditions: 6/7/16

Water Clarity: Clear-Muddy: Smaller Tribs are clear or clearing up, some of the bigger rivers are very muddy

Water Temperatures:  55-65

Hatches: Golden Stoneflies, Drakes, March Brown, Olive/Brown Caddis Flies

Suggested Patterns:  Smethursts 20 Bomb, Chart. Copper Johns (#14-16) Pheasant Tails (#12-18) Hare’s Ears (#14-18) Bird of Prey Olive (#14-16) Hotwire Caddis (#14-16) Hare Copper-Golden Stone, Sparkle Minnows, Montana Mouthwash, Muddler Minnows (#4-8) Olive Wooly Buggers (#6-10)

We finally got rain! And we’re going to be getting more over the next few days. The bigger rivers are cranking pretty good right now and the Winooski is looking like chocolate milk. With the incoming rain over the next few days it probably will not clear up anytime soon. Lots of the smaller streams are fishable and lots of them are pretty much gin clear. Lots of the smaller streams clear up or start to clear up within a few hours of rain stopping so even yesterday, there was plenty of fishable water. Frank and I had to drive a little yesterday to find good water but we did and we were able to hook a few nice wild brown trout. We landed two, lost one and had another 3 follow ups. These fish are aggressive, especially in higher water and will chase a fly right up to you feet. I had one fish hit my fly four casts in a row before I was able to hook him. Over the next few days the fishing should be good, my guess is most of the fish over the next few days will be taken on sub-surface patterns since the flows are up a bit. If they do drop that may change but often in higher flows fish are less likely to come up for a dry fly. Don’t rule dry flies out completely but plan to fish streamers and nymphs. The bass fishing is on fire right now on lots of bodies of water so if you want to get out after bass now is the time!
