Nice to see some more rain… Looks like we may end up with a good amount by tomorrow morning but who really knows.
The past few weeks of fishing has been pretty good but we’ve definitely been a bit more limited given the conditions. We’ve primarily been focusing on the smaller, higher elevation mountain streams with the warmer temps which have been pretty good! We’ve spent a few mornings hitting some of the bigger tribs and have found cool water in the mornings. The fish have all seemed to be loving the high water as they’ve all been super fat! Even the stockies have been nice and plump.
Over the past week we’ve ran into a handful of large fish way up in some of the smaller mountain streams which has been a ton of fun. A wild 18″ brown on a 3wt and a dry fly is about as good as it gets! We’ve seen a few giant brookies and some really nice rainbows as well!
The rain today into tomorrow may make things a little trickier over the next few days. Smaller mtn streams should be good by tomorrow at some point. It’s really just going to depend on how much rain we actually get. By late Saturday, or Sunday some of the mid sized tribs could be in perfect shape to throw streamers, again, it’s all based on what we get for rainfall, some streams may not be fishable until Monday… Be sure to have a 6 or 7wt in the car rigged up with a big articulated fly and a sink tip just in case! Some of the biggest fish we run into every year are after heavy rains when the water is high and dirty-2ft of visibility seems to be the perfect color for the big fish to chase big flies and hammer them! (sometimes if the water gets too clear, we’ll get lots of chases but very few bites) Be sure to bring a thermometer with you regardless of where you venture, water temps on the small streams have been good, a chunk of the mid sized ones have cooler off in the past couple of days and this rain should continue to cool off with the rain but it’s always worth checking. If you need a new thermometer we’ve got a pile of the fishpond digital ones in stock! Come buy one!!!
Good luck on the river this weekend! Hopefully if the rain ever stops we’ll have a more detailed report, including water temps on the bigger rivers.
