No complaints with the fishing lately! The fall like weather we’ve been having has been awesome! Bigger rivers have been cool and the fish are looking good! After all the high water we had this summer the big river trout seem to be happy and healthy! We could use some rain!! We’ve been catching fish on a mix of both sub surface and surface flies, morning-mid day nymphing has been more productive and the afternoon/evening has been best with dries. We’ve been seeing both ISOs and BWOs coming off, ISOs haven’t been super consistent but the fish still seem to be keying in on big, gray bodied mayfly patterns. We’ve been catching a good amount of fish swinging flies as well. Mostly soft hackles and bigger p tails or prince nymphs. ISO nymphs are a very active nymph that tends to swim around a lot in the water so swinging a bigger ISO sized nymph can generate some awesome bites from fish in faster water. Small, sparse, dark bodied soft hackles have been working well too!
The smaller mountain streams have been ok, the water level is starting to get pretty low so the fish are starting to get a little spooky but there’s plenty of other water thats been fishing well. The mid sized tribs are in pretty good shape; the waters a little low on those too but temps are good.
Over the next week we’re going to see a bit of an increase in air temps, night time temps will be staying fairly cool but we may see some afternoon water temps on the bigger rivers start to creep up towards 70 by the end of the weekend. Bring your thermometer out with you to make sure the temps are good. AM temps should be fine every morning, but still a good idea to check.
