Not a ton has changed over the past few weeks. We still really, really need rain. Looks like we may get some next week but we’ve been hearing that for a while with no actual rain ever showing up. The fishing on the smaller streams has been pretty quiet, the fish are still there and seem happy and healthy but with the levels being as low as they are the fish are super spooky. We’ve spent most of our time lately on the Winooski and Lamoille. I wouldn’t necessarily say they’re fishing all that well but they could definitely be fishing much worse. The important thing right now is to get into the current. Lots of water we’d normally be fishing right now isn’t happening. Ridiculously low water has definitely limited the spots fish will actually hold. If you find one right now, there’s going to be more.

We’ve been getting fish on nymphs, dries and soft hackles. As temps warm up over the course of the day the dry fly fishing has picked up, primarily BWOs and ISOs at the moment. Did see some October Caddis hatching the other day but nothing too significant. For anyone getting out this week sleep in. With these cold night time temps the water is chilly in the am and the fish are definitely not as active. Go out at the crack of noon and fish until 6 or 7pm. If possible, bring two rods too. One rigged up to fish dries, and one to nymph. This will allow you to nymph and dry fly fish without having to re-rig which will save a ton of time.
